A new study finds that 61% of American workers took at least one day of paid vacation time in the previous year to care for another person.
The Hartford Financial Services Group and ComPsych Corp. conducted a survey of 862 employees over the age 45 and found that more than six in 10 “are using their paid time off as an extension of their hectic lives, rather than a vacation,” Barbara Campbell, Hartford’s regional VP, said in a release.
A Wall Street Journal report on the Hartford/ComPsych study notes that more paid vacation time is going toward elder care and other caregiving as hospital stays become shorter—which often means adult children or other family members must help with home care and rehabilitation.
